Claudja Barry

Born in Jamaica in 1952, Claudja’s parents left and moved to Canada while she was still a young child. Raised in Toronto, Claudja was exposed to a variety of musical influences
from an early age. She was taken with singing and began taking vocal lessons in hopes of a career in music. By the age of 15 she had mastered the art of singing and had developed
her voice to an outstanding level, so unique was her talent that she easily won an audition and spot on a local television show.
By her late teens Claudja was headlining her own show and after graduation she quickly fled to New York in search of stardom. While in New York Claudja landed roles in two
shows, “Hair” and “Catch My Soul.” The latter, a touring company production, brought her to Europe. While in Europe she began doing session work as a background vocalist. The
session work led to a chance meeting with producer Frank Farina. Farina had just scored a European hit with 1975′s “Baby Do You Wanna Bump?” under the pseudonym “Boney M”
(Boney: Hero of an Australian TV-Series). Due to the success, there was a demand for live appearances of Boney M. Farian and agent Katja Wolf hired 4 girls and 1 guy. Maizie
Williams, Sheila Bonnick, a girl named Nathalie, Claudja Barry and the male dancer Mike. This line-up did only dancing, lip syncing and press appearances. After a brief tour Claudja
Barry was replaced by Liz Mitchell in 1976.
During her brief role with Boney M, Claudja met a handsome young record producer Jürgen Korduletsch. Korduletsch would play a significant role in her professional life as
producer/writer/manager, and later in her personal life as her husband. Korduletsch was the owner of an up and coming label, Lollipop Records. He convinced Barry that she should
record with him and signed her immediately to a contract. They cut five sides that Korduletsch co-wrote with his partner/arranger Jorg Evers. The tracks were quickly licensed by
Salsoul Records and sent, along with Tom Moulton, back to the studio for remixing. The result was Barry’s 1977 debut album “Sweet Dynamite.” The album was a major hit in clubs,
but all of the material holds up nicely away from the dance floor. None of the songs come across as mechanical or insincere, and Barry is as soulful on the haunting, European
flavored “Love For The Sake Of Love” as she is on the exuberant “Why Must A Girl Like Me” and the gritty title song, which has as much to do with soul and funk as it does with
Euro-disco. Though Barry’s vocals are the album’s main focus, she lays out on “Live A Little Bit,” an infectious instrumental that successfully fuses Euro-disco with African pop and
reggae. Thanks to 12″ singles, the title track and “Dance, Dance, Dance” were top ten club smashes and made the album an international hit and an essential disco classic. But this
was only the start of what was to become a long and fruitful career for Claudja and Jürgen.
